According to an article published in the Downtown Journal, serving the Northeast and Downtown areas of Minneapolis, homeowners are demanding style and function out of their recent landscape designs. Fire pit gathering spots, cooking and dining areas, gardens and utilizing recycled materials are all the rage in Minnesota. Vast lush lawns have gone to the wayside being replaced by landscape design that serves a function as much as it does aesthetic beauty.



From fire pits, fireplaces and hearths to a grilling area complete with multiple burners and side counters for food preparation, fire is in!



Creating an "edible landscape" is another way to increase function out of your backyard landscape. Gardens can yield as much as a $500 return on investment annually, according to the National Gardening Association (NGA). The article recommends to start small and plant items that are easy to grow; tomatoes, carrots, squash, peppers and greens of various sorts. Once you have established a solid base and knowledge of your garden, then you can branch out and expand your garden with other varieties of food.



By using recycled pavers and stone blocks from old buildings and architecture, homeowners are finding cost effective ways to improve seating areas, benches, retaining walls and paths all while being environmentally conscious. You can utilize these stones for garden paths, heavy traffic areas and even create nice planting areas for your gardens. Stone is relatively inexpensive if you do your homework and can really help section out functional areas for your backyard.
